Tokheim Flame Arresters are designed to be used at the termination of a vent pipe, which vents volatile vapors directly into the atmosphere. Vapors passing through the stack, if ignited from an outside source, will burn like a gas water heater or furnace. The fire cannot flash through the Plate Stacks into the tank. The "Plate Stacks" are protected from the elements, by an aluminum weather shield. If a fire were to occur, fusible links drop the weather shield at 165 degrees F., allowing the flame to propagate upwards and away from the Flame Arrester. When the pressure inside the tank diminishes, the fire will die out, much like shutting off the valve on a water heater or furnace. Tokheim Flame Arresters are U/L listed. Series 85 Flame Arresters are NOT appropriate for Class B gasses.
Tokheim Flame Arresters consist of a cast iron base, cover and posts, plus aluminum weather shields and plate stacks. The plates are 0.061" thick and are spaced 0.020" apart to make the stack.
Tokheim 2" and 3" flame arresters are UL approved.
Be sure plate stacks and base are free of any packing materials. Apply pipe sealer to connecting pipes, screw arrester on pipe by hand. Then tighten securely with a pipe wrench applied to flanges of unit.
It is important that the vent pipe to which the flame arrester is attached be extended a safe distance above ground and if it is near a building it should be extended above the roof. Flame arresters have no moving parts, however it is important to inspect and clean the plate stacks periodically. To inspect, remove nuts on top of cover and lift cover off. Remove plate stacks and inspect by holding up to lights. Spaces between plates should be open. To clean plate stack, immerse in warm soapy water and agitate to remove dirt. Rinse well with hot water and blow dry with compressed air. Clean unit with soft cloth dampened with naphtha. Replace plate stacks and cover and tighten nuts firmly.
The Tokheim Flame Arresters consist of a two piece cast iron housing and an aluminum plate stack. The plates are 1-1/4" wide, 4-3/8" long, and .061" thick. A total of 33 plates are spaced .020" apart to make a stack of 2-11/16". Fire cannot flash through this plate stack.
The units may be used on vent pipes from 3/4 to 2 inches in diameter. Working pressure on threaded in-line is 380 psi.
